Comparing the Cost of Different Weight Loss Surgeries

Posted by Patrick Domkowski on Thu, Nov 08, 2012

It is important that you know all the facts and figures before choosing the weight loss surgery that is right for you. After you become familiar with specifics of each surgery, the next step is to compare prices. The average price ranges for three of the most popular weight loss surgeries are listed below.

Gastric Bypass Surgery: $15,000 to $30,000

Although all gastric bypass surgeries accomplish the same task, there are two different ways that your doctor can perform the procedure. These include open and laparoscopic.  Open gastric bypass surgery is performed by making one large incision in the abdominal area. Laparoscopic bypass surgery, on the other hand, is performed by making multiple tiny incisions that barely leave a mark when healed. Traditionally the price of laparoscopic surgery is on the higher side of the price range. This is because, the doctor has to go through extra training and acquire special equipment.

Note: Cost of surgery depends on if insurance is covering the surgery, if a patient is self-pay and other factors. To find out specific pricing contact us for more information.

Lap band surgery is one of the least invasive weight loss surgeries, with one of the fastest recovery times. It consists of implanting a small silastic inflatable band around the upper portion of the stomach. The band is adjusted by changing the amount of saline in the band. Make sure that when calculating the price of your surgery that you also figure in how much the band adjustments will cost. The adjustments can vary anywhere from $35 to $200. Make sure to talk with your doctor about just how many adjustments you need and if those visits are calculated into the total cost.

Gastric Sleeve Surgery: $7,000 to $20,000

Similar to gastric bypass surgery, gastric sleeve surgery can also be completed using the same two techniques. The open surgery option uses one large incision, while the laparoscopic option uses multiple tiny incisions. The laparoscopic option is consistently more expensive, which gives the cost of gastric sleeve surgery its large price range. The sleeve surgery removes part of your stomach, but does not alter the course or flow of food through your stomach. This cuts down on the amount of absorption problems and mineral deficiency problems that many patients experience after other weight loss surgeries.

Hidden Costs of Weight Loss Surgery

When looking for the best price, remember that many doctors do NOT include the hospital stay or follow up visits in the price. Be sure to see exactly what is included with the price of your surgery. Other services that may not be included in your fee include: anesthesia fee, psychology consults, and nutrition consults.  These may be necessary to get your insurance to cover your surgery. If you are not able to use your insurance, the self-pay options are normally at the low end of the above price ranges. All weight loss surgeries are not right for everyone, so it is important that you talk to a doctor to find out which of the many weight loss surgery options is best for your situation.
