Choosing your weight loss surgeon is just as important a decision as choosing to have the surgery itself. You want a surgeon who is compassionate, understands your goals and has a good background of experience. Weight loss surgery is a life-altering decision, and having the best surgeon and team to support you along the way can make all the difference. Below are four key things to look for when choosing your bariatric surgeon.
1. ASMBS Member
When researching different surgeons, take the time to look at their bio or call the office and ask if the surgeon is a member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Members of the ASMBS are highly experienced surgeons who have to meet several strict standards.
Have performed at least 25 bariatric surgeries, as the primary surgeon, within the last two years.
Be board certified by the American Board of Surgery or the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery and/or is a Fellow of the American or Royal College of Surgeons.
Submit letter of recommendation forms from two current Regular or Senior members.
2. Specializes in Laparoscopic Surgery
It is important to look for a surgeon with a wealth of experience in laparoscopic weight loss surgeries because these are less invasion and have shorter recovery times. Review the surgeon’s bio, website and reviews to determine their background in laparoscopic surgery. It is important to remember that not all patients are candidates for this approach, but it will be addressed during your meeting with the surgeon.
3. Strong Patient Testimonials
Real life patient reviews are some of the strongest considering factors when looking for a surgeon. If a surgeon has photos, written reviews and video reviews from prior patients featured on their website, then make sure to review all of that information. The patients will often talk about their results from surgery, but also the surgeon himself/herself -- which can give you a good idea of their character and involvement in the process. For examples of these types of video reviews, look at our Testimonials page on our website.
The right doctor is just as important as the right weight loss center. Look for a comprehensive surgical center, which will provide you with well-rounded patient care. A high-quality bariatric surgery center will have a wealth of resources for its patients to help both before and after surgery. These resources could include:
affiliation with nearby hospitals
affiliations with psychologists and physical therapists
weight loss seminars
If your surgeon’s facility has been given the standing of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP), that means they have been through a rigorous accreditation process by the ASMBS and has been found worthy of this certification. This has long been known as a Center of Excellence (COE) for bariatric surgery.
