Many of us have had to deal with the effects of being overweight. People that are overweight are judged by those in our lives and the common assumption is that laziness or lack of self-control is the reason for the excess weight. For most, this is untrue, but that does not mean that you have not thought of using extreme weight loss methods to lower the numbers on the scale.

There are many options available for those who are struggling with obesity that will not put your health in danger. Even though being overweight does put you in jeopardy of developing serious health conditions, the risks you are taking when trying the following extreme weight loss methods can damage well-being more than you realize.

Any extreme weight loss method that promises rapid weight loss through the use of pills or other non-FDA approved methods should cause you to be wary. The following list contains methods used for extreme weight loss should be avoided.

Marlex Tongue Patch

A Beverly Hills plastic surgeon created this extreme weight loss method that has yet to be approved by the FDA. A patch made of Marlex is sewn onto your tongue in a ten-minute procedure with six sutures. The concept of this method is to make eating solid foods agonizingly painful, forcing patch wearers to adhere to an 800 calorie a day liquid diet. The procedure cost approximately two-thousand dollars and lasts for 30 days.

The parasitic, segmented creatures have been used as an extreme weight loss method since the early twentieth century. While it is illegal to possess tapeworms in the United States, those who are willing to do anything to lose weight, regardless of the risks, can obtain the parasites on the internet. While most that become infected with a tapeworm display no symptoms, others may have abdominal pain, dizziness, and vitamin deficiencies. In extreme cases, the tapeworm can cause intestinal blockages that require surgery.

Binging and Purging

We have all been there, using food to give us comfort after having a bad day. Most will make up for it the next day by making healthier choices, but others will get caught in the dangerous cycle of binging and purging. Using these extreme weight loss methods can cause lifelong damage to your body, including tooth decay and mouth sores, acid reflux and ulcers, a chronic sore throat with hoarseness, and possibly rupturing your stomach or esophagus.

Tube Feeding

Of all of the extreme weight loss methods that you can find on the internet, tube feeding is one of the most appalling. Those who are looking to lose weight quickly, including brides looking to lose that last ten pounds, have taken to this dangerous method. This method consists of a feeding tube being inserted through the nose, it then travels by way of the esophagus to the stomach, where it stays twenty-four hours a day. This technique requires the dieter to avoid food for ten days, while they are fed an 800 calorie a day liquid diet through the tube that is high in protein and low in carbohydrates.
